Jean Louis Parisian Bistro

There was a lot of options on the menu for gluten free & vegetarian diners.  I had my heart set on the duck before even walking in.  The Magret De Caneton A L'Orange on a wild mushroom risotto with baked asparagus did not disappoint.

This was the best asparagus I have ever had.  Perfectly crunchy, yet cooked, with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on top.  The risotto was very tasty, with a bit of crunchiness around the edges.  The crisp really set it apart from any other risotto I've had here in Pittsburgh.  The orange sauce was amazing.  It was sweet and savory.  And the duck was cooked to perfection.

La Tartare - This was a very flavorful beef tartare.  It had just the right amount of onion crisp to spices. If you don't like raw beef, this isn't the starter for you.  But if you do, definately give it a go.

Chocolate Mousse

The mousse was rich and chocolaty.  There was a surprising graininess to the texture.  At first I thought to myself, "Why is this not smooth like I expected?"  Then I realized the flakes were chocolate melting in my mouth with every bite I took.  It was unexpectedly delicious.

Bacon Cheeseburger Soup

I was in the mood for soup since it's a bit brisk out in Pittsburgh this time of year.  I asked a few coworkers what types of soup they like to get a few good ideas for something different.  I heard southwest chicken tortilla soup, broccoli & cheddar, and chicken noodle, but one idea really seemed different & I needed to give it a try.  The suggestion was bacon cheeseburger soup.  Challenge accepted.  This is my own twist to the bacon cheeseburger soup.

First, cook some bacon.  Set the bacon aside & put 1 tbsp of bacon grease in a pot.

Slice 1 onion and saute until onions are translucent.

Add the ground sirloin and cook until brown.  Add salt.  Then add 4 cups of beef broth.  Whisk in 2 tsp of xanthan gum as a thickener then bring to a boil.

Grate 2 cups of white cheddar cheese and add to boiling soup.  Add an additional 1 cup of sharp yellow cheddar cheese.  Stir until the cheese melts.  Then add 1 cup of cream.

Crumble 3-4 strips of cooked bacon into the soup.  Serve hot and garnished with sliced pickles.  The pickles really kick the flavor up a notch.

Ingredients:
1 lbs ground sirloin
1/2-1 lbs bacon
1 medium sized onion
4 cups beef broth
1/2 tsp salt
 2 cups white cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup heavy cream
2 tsp xanthan gum (gluten free thickener - optional)
pickles (optional)
Makes 4 servings

Seasons 52

Seasons 52

I like to add a travel review every once in a while, just in case you Pittsburghers are traveling!  So if you are in the Columbia, MD area, a consistent gluten free restaurant is Seasons 52.  The atmosphere is classy.  There is usually someone playing piano & singing.  This may be a good thing, or a bad one, but it is interesting to say the least.  This is a chain restaurant, so it is consistent.  They have a gluten free menu, and the things I've ordered have come out gluten free. But the down side is, the service sucks.  The wait staff is slow & inattentive.  I asked the hostess to get me a gluten free menu when she seated us, but she never returned.  We waited a while for a server to introduce herself to us, which is annoying when you are hungry. The trade off is the food is good and consistent.

In a past visit, I order the corn and bacon chowder.  It was really good.  This trip, I was leaning for something a little bit lighter.  I ordered the sesame grilled salmon salad with jicama, lemon grass sauce, mango, and toasted sesame dressing.  The salad was fresh.  I hate when I'm served a salad with wilted or browning lettuce.  This lettuce was green.

The salad was sweet.  The mango & jicama made the salad sweet and the sesame dressing was like pouring honey over it.  The salmon toned the sweetness down with a salty salmon flavor.  I was a bit skeptical about the salmon; it came out looking not so gluten free, but it was fine.  I double checked with the server when he delivered it and he confirmed it did say gluten free in the kitchen.

I enjoyed the salad, but I felt like the bowl was stuffed with greens, which mostly went to waste.  If you need to fill up on greens, this is the salad for you.  I, however, eat all the good stuff out of it & left a bunch of greens.

I didn't think I saved room for dessert.  In the beginning of the meal, I had already decided on cherry creme brulee.  At the end of the meal, I didn't think I had it in me to to eat it.  Until the dessert tray came out.  Tiniest desserts ever!  The creme brulee was in a double shot glass.  Well, I guess I could eat two more spoonfuls.

It was delicious, but small.  Sad to say, dessert was over to quickly!!

My second choice would have been the filet Mignon.  Here's a glimpse of what that looks like from another member of my party.

Delallos Fort Couch Cafe

Delallos Fort Couch Cafe

I love this place.  It's so cute and the service is great.  I never got sick here.  They really do a nice job of taking care of people.  But my one complaint is it could be bigger.  I always feel like a table of four is too many people.  We are all squished together.  And I look around the room and see a large party of ten taking up most of the dining room.

The building looks so much bigger on the outside.  When you get inside, there is no room.  I wish these guys would put an addition on the building.  I thought that they might have an upstairs to this place.  Maybe it's just for parties.  If they aren't entertaining a party that night, maybe they could open it up for regular dining customers.  Just a thought.  An upstairs may not even exist.  They would make so much more money if they could serve a few more people each night.

I recommend making a reservation here.  The hostesses always look at me like I have three heads when I walk in, until I say I have a reservation.  Then she's nice as pie.  I get the feeling you are not going to get a seat if you don't make a reservation, so I always make a reservation at least a week in advance.

Now, on to the food.

I ordered off the specials menu.  The regular menu has some options that can be gluten free, but I wanted to check out a special this time.

I saw a simple preparation of Swordfish and thought I'd give it a try.  when ordering, I wasn't even offered the soup as an option, so I'm guessing that the beef cabbage is not gluten free, even though it sounds like it should be, unless there is barley in it.  Ok, not a problem.  Salad it is.

She skipped the soup option and asked me what kind of dressing I'd like on my salad.  I declined the dressing because I don't trust dressings.  They have vinegar.  I don't know what kind of vinegar or how good the vinegar is.  So I would rather not risk it.  I never minded a dry salad, as long as there is more just lettuce in it.  I did have to ask for no peppers, which they did.  I wish it had cheese in it.  Cheese is my dressing.  But I didn't ask.  I'm sure they would accommodate.

I ordered the swordfish with lemon.  It was simple and meaty with a lemon tang.  The two pieces felt like too much, but since there wasn't mush to this meal, I ate them both with no trouble.  It was juicy and wasn't dried out.  The outside had a bit of a light char like it was actually grilled.  And it might have been.  I enjoyed it very much.

My one complaint about the food was the side of vegetables.  This was a side of peas, carrots, & asparagus.  It was mostly peas, which I don't like.  When I ordered, I figured there would be enough of a mixture of other vegetables to offset the peas.  I was wrong.

I'm kind of against baby carrots due to the processing and manufacturing practices used to make them... baby.  Look it up if you don't know.  I also don't think they have the flavor of real carrots.  I understand that real carrots need pealed, which costs labor, but the end results are so much better.  There was only one piece of asparagus in here.  It was cut up to make it look like there was more, but I'm sure that only one piece made it into this dish.  That wouldn't have been so bad, but it was over cooked.  Way over cooked.  The color of these vegetables wasn't a fresh color.  Everything in this side dish was over cooked.  It actually tasted like it was made a week before and reheated several times. Or maybe the whole thing was cooked & then frozen & heated back up.   I understand the peas being frozen, but asparagus & carrots?

Either way, this place would significantly improve and take its food to the next level if they used fresh vegetables for the side.  Or maybe everyone is ordering the pasta as a side.  If the pasta could be gluten free, I'd consider that.  Perhaps, if their food was at the next level, they wouldn't be able to handle the patron's knocking down the door to get in... Unless they expanded by putting an addition on the building.

Vue412

Vue412

This is a small place on Grandview Ave on the top of Mt Washington.  The decor is a little outdated, but not so much that I feel like I'm stepping into the 80's.  The view is great.  This place could be a great space with a little help from a professional lighting expert.

The carpet is discolored and I'm wondering if they flood in here, but it seems to be consistent between the two levels, so maybe it's intentional?  I'm not so certain.  Perhaps tile would be a better choice, but that's not important.  The food is what is important.

Let's start with the menu.  It is way too large for the size of the kitchen here.  It has not clear theme and it's a good thing the place is empty because if they were to fill all the tables, the kitchen would not be able to handle it, I'm sure.

Looking over the menu, there are only two clear choices I can order without too much modification, hopefully they will be gluten free without modification - the scallops & the filet.

I ask the waitress about the risotto that come with the scallops and the mushroom & artichoke soup.  She checks with the kitchen and yes, both are gluten free.   The soup is vegetarian, too.

One of my companions, a vegetarian, looks over the menu and finds nothing meatless on it.  Oddly enough, the lunch menu is combined to the diner menu and he sees vegeburgers and flat bread pizza.  He asks the waitress if he can order from the lunch menu, but to his disappointment, they don't have dough or vegeburgers made.  They shouldn't have even tempted someone with the lunch options, if they can't have them for diner.  That just puts a bad taste in people's mouth.

Since there were no vegetarian options on the menu, they offered to make a pasta with vegetables for my friend, even though pasta is the go to when you don't know what else vegetarian to cook.  He said if he never eats pasta again, he'd be happy.  But what can you do.

Before finalizing my order, I asked the waitress if there were any bell peppers going to be on my meal because even though the menu doesn't mention them, a lot of restaurants needless add them. I'm allergic to bell peppers.  We have a conversation about my tolerance to hot peppers, but not bell peppers - green, yellow, red or orange.  She assures me that the scallops with risotto I ordered had no bell peppers.

The mushroom soup came out.  I ordered a cup; my friend ordered a bowl.  It was delicious! It had an assortment of wild mushrooms.  It was creamy.  It was tasty.  I think I saw a morel mushroom, maybe a porcini mushroom.  Whatever mushrooms, were delicious.  There were some little red vegetables floating in the soup.  They seemed to be a chili pepper, not a bell pepper, as they added a bit of heat to the soup, so I ate it without complaint.  The small cup left me wanting more.  My friend's bowl of soup was entree sized.  It was way too large.  He's definitely not finishing his pasta.

Our entrees arrived and the potions were huge.  You definitely can charge these prices for less food up here with a view.  I took one look at my scallops and there were roasted red bell peppers lying on top of everything.  This unnecessary garnish is exactly what I was talking about.  The server took it back and had them make me a new plate. Thank goodness, because I'd be pretty sick if I just picked them off.  They brought out more asparagus to make up for the mistake.  That was nice.

The scallops were huge.  That was a wonderful surprise.  They were cooked all the way through without being rubbery and over cooked.  The only problem was they were a little sandy.

I took one bite of the risotto and was shocked.  This was not made with risotto rice.  It was plain white rice.  Steamed.  Maybe.  It sure didn't look like the little arborio rice grains that this is supposed to be made with.  It was soggy and mushy.  It was cheesy rice not risotto.

The server did go through great lengths to make sure I didn't get sick.  She was courteous, knowledgeable, and entertaining.

My other friend ordered the gnocchi and sausage.  She said to was nothing to write home about and that she'd be eating it for the next two days.  That plate is big & they filled it up!

This just seemed to be a mediocre Italian restaurant that didn't even make it's own noodles.  I feel there are cooks in the kitchen, but not a chef.  I think many people will try this place, but not many will return.  If they want people to return again and again, they will have to change the menu drastically.  Until then, it will be as empty as it was when I was in there.  At least I didn't have a gluten reaction here!

The Yard

The Yard

The market Square location is a gastropub bar atmosphere with gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches.  For a $1 upgrade, you can get them gluten free.  The sandwiches come with fries & tomato soup.  Since they don't have a dedicated fryer, you'll need to sub out the fries for something.  I also so not like tomato soup and needed to sub out the soup for the soup of the day.  It was a turkey and noodle soup, but they add the noodles at the end so they served it without them, making it gluten free.

The grilled cheese sandwiches are pretty pricey to start with, and after subbing out both sides, it was even more expensive, but it's been a while since I've had a grilled cheese sandwich that I didn't make myself, so it was worth it.

The soup was pretty good.  It had potatoes, ground turkey, and carrots.  The broth was made from a thicker stock, but not creamy.  My other side was a fruit cup.  It was pretty average with just watermelon, cantaloupe, and honey dew.  Both sides cam in a neat little stainless steel cup.

The sandwich I got was called shrooms.  It had mushrooms, onions, fresh mozzarella cheese and lettuce, all which were extremely tasty.  The onions were sauteed.  The mushrooms were juicy.  The cheese was melty.  The bread was a whole grain gluten free bread of a good quality.  The sandwich was big, and after eating the soup & fruit cup, I had to take half home.  It was still good later for a snack.

The waitress was extremely knowledgeable about the gluten free options and very considerate about my food sensitivity.  On the items she was unsure about, the soup, she asked the kitchen & returned with a prompt reply. Everything turned out pretty good for this adventure.

They also have a Shadyside location, but I went to the Market Square location.

Sunny Bridge Farms Natural Foods & Cafe

Sunny Bridge Farms Natural Foods & Cafe

As you can probably tell, I love to eat out.  But a passion of mine is also cooking.  You guessed it, it’s all gluten free.  One of the recurring issues at restaurants is the same at home.  Sometimes it’s hard to tell what ingredients are gluten free.  At least at home, I don’t have to worry about cross contamination, as long as I check out my ingredients before I buy them.  This usually consists of a lot of googling.  Sometimes it’s still unclear without contacting the manufacturer or finding someone who has.  With that being said, I found a great place in McMurray that carries a lot of gluten free options.  They are well labeled products to weed out any confusion.  It’s Sunny Bridge Farms Natural Food & Cafe.

Now I like to cook... A lot!  And a good portion of my meals are naturally gluten free, like scallops, shrimp, and steak.  Sometimes I crave the things that would normally have gluten in them, like pizza, lasagna, and bread.

Sunny Bridge Farms is a health foods store with a cafe.  I haven’t eaten at the cafe because when I was there, they were closing soon, and I don’t like to order food at the end of someone’s shift.  I guess that’s the once restaurant worker in me.  I did find a great selection of ingredients.  I found my favorite gluten free flour mix, Better Batter.  It’s a little bit expensive, but it makes the best pasta.  I made wonderful noodles for my homemade chicken noodle soup.  My mom couldn’t even tell that they were gluten free.  I’ve made great ravioli’s and pierogie out of this mix, too.

Another great ingredient I found was vanilla powder.  Instead of using an alcohol based vanilla in your baked goods, you can use this powder.  The most annoying thing I found was not knowing what the alcohol was derived from.  Is it gluten free or not?  Most don’t tell you.  Now you have a better option.  I haven't tried it in ice cream yet, but the next time I make homemade ice cream, I'm using this vanilla.

There was so many more things I wanted to try, but I just ran out of time & money.  Gluten free surely isn’t cheap, but with it becoming more mainstream, the price is finally starting to come down.

Sunny Bridge farms has a rewards program that is free to sign up for. Check them out if you love to cook or just need specialty health food items.

Dish Osteria and Bar

Dish Osteria

I love this little gem of a place.  I've been here a few times.  It's tucked on the corner of 17th and Sarah Street in the Historic South Side district of Pittsburgh.  It's service is superb.  They will modify a lot of the dishes to be gluten free.  The people are friendly, but most of all, the food is unique and always delicious.  One thing I love about this restaurant is the evolution of the menu.  It is always changing, yet some elements remain constant.

The restaurant is a small establishment focused on Italian dishes with accents of Sicilian and Mediterranean flavors.   There's pasta, seafood, poultry and more.  The pasta is not gluten free, but plenty of other dishes can be made gluten free.  Just ask.

This time I ordered the cuddlefish.  I've never had cuddlefish before, but I knew this was the place to try it.

It was salty, it was savory.  It was interesting.  I can't say I've ever had anything like it.  And I liked it.

I also had a gluten free dessert here.  The Panna Cotta was so delicious I wish I ordered two!  It is a vanilla bean custard with berries.  I was so excited about this gluten free dessert after seeing it it at the table next to me, that I ate it before I could snap a picture.  That is totally not like me.  I love taking photos of food.

One Thirty One East

One Thirty One East

Walking in, the bar is the first thing you see.  It was a nice little place.  The hostess took us up stair, past a crazy wooden giraffe, to our table.  It was one of those places where a bench seat runs along the wall and your companion sits in a chair.

There were several items on the menu I wanted.  I narrowed it down to two.  But first, as always, I needed to consult the waitress to see if either dish could be modified to be gluten free.

I told the waitress I had it narrowed down to two options, but I wondered if they could be modified by the kitchen to be gluten free, the steak & the pork belly.  She answered me by offering the chicken and grits and the salmon.  I was irritated that she began offering completely different items than what I wanted.  I asked her again, can you please check with the kitchen regarding these two items, I'm really interested in the pork belly, but it comes with noodles.

"Can you please ask the kitchen to sub out potatoes for the noodles and find out if it can still be done gluten free?"

She returned with a yes.

I ordered the pork belly.  I had to substitute out the noodles for fingerling potatoes to make it gluten free.  The skin was crispy and the meat was tender.  It was a big enough portion to take home for lunch the following day.  I was slightly worried about what ever the white sauce on the potatoes was, but it didn't seems to bother me later so that's a win!

This was the tuna special.  It had wasabi mashed potatoes and vegetables.  It has onion straws, so that isn't gluten free, but I'm sure you can order it without them.  Just make sure you check to see if any of this is marinated in soy sauce, first.

Cafe IO

Cafe IO
Upon finding a parking space, which is limited and mostly metered, I walked into a place I didn't expect.  I saw a deli counter in front of me & no seating.  I grabbed a paper menu from the wall and didn't see any of the burgers or salads I saw online.  I was highly disappointed.

I tried to order a spinach salad with some sort of meat on it because I saw a spinach and shrimp salad onlune.  The man behind the counter said, "We don't have any kind of meat to add to your salad.  If you want that, you'll have to go to our cafe next door."

Relieved and a bit embarrassed, I said, "Oh, that's actually what I'm looking for!"

Apparently, you can order deli meats to go from the deli counter & have a sit down meal at the cafe.  The sign was above both doors and I just walked into the first one I saw.

I walked next door to find a beautiful little cafe.  The menu was bigger & the the place was lively. It was actually a very beautiful, relaxing place.

I ordered the spinach salad with shrimp I was searching for.  It lived up to my expectations.

The salad had apples, cranberries, pecans, and goat cheese.  The dressing was a white balsamic honey vinaigrette.  It was just as I imagined.

And if you'd like to see some of the non-gluten free items, here's the burger & grilled cheese.

Capital Grille

Capital Grille

The atmosphere is nice.  It's upscale and interesting.  There are many Pittsburgh themed portraits on the walls.  It's nice when you can see the kitchen cooking your food, too.

I pointed out that my meal had to be gluten free to the waiter.  After ordering, they brought out bread & crackers.  I didn't mind so much, but I guess I've been a bit spoiled with other restaurants bringing out gluten free options before my meal.  No big deal.

I ordered the truffle crusted sirloin with the blue cheese and red wine sauce.  I was really interested in the preparation of the steak rather than the cut.  I don't usually care for a sirloin, but thought I'd take a risk.

It was a gigantic cut of meat.  Actually, it was the biggest sirloin I'd even seen.  It could have been done a little rarer, but wasn't too over done.  The sauce was delicious.  The truffle crust was very strong.  It was worth the risk.

I didn't order any sides.  I just don't care for the group shared sides that are over priced.  Anyways, there was nothing gluten free on the menu that really spoke to me.  If they would have had something unique, I would have given it a try, but there was nothing in the side department to write home about so I skipped it.

The price point here was $$$$.  Pretty pricey.  But they focused on service, keeping your water glass full at all times & having a few extra waiters bustling around you to make you feel like you are getting a lot of attention.

They did have a nice touch at the end of the meal.  They brought out 2 free gluten free desserts - berries and cream and a coffee dusted flourless chocolate cake.  I love berries and cream!  The flourless cake was delicious, too, but I don't like coffee, so I couldn't eat much of it.

It was a nice touch to end the meal.

Hyde Park

I can't tell you how awesome lobster mashed potatoes are, you'll have to try them your self at Hyde Park.  Although the steaks are way too overpriced, they were cooked perfect and very delicious.  But this place no only has great steaks, it has unique sides.  Unfortunately, the prices were $$$$ to match the main course.

I thought $18 was too much for a side, but I really wanted to try the lobster mashed potatoes.  I'm so glad I did.  They were wonderful!  I could eat them as a meal.  They were creamy, and salty, and buttery, and had a few whole lobster claws sitting on top.  These were amazing.

For my main course, I ordered the filet with lobster, Bearnaise sauce, asparagus, and mushrooms.  It was cooked to perfection and topped with a multitude of flavors that made my taste buds happy. It was filling, too.

They had a lot of cuts of meat to choose from, but I love the filet.  They also had cute Pittsburgh names for the preparations of some of the steaks.  These were a bit more pricey than a plain ones, but if you're celebrating something special, then why not splurge?

The onion straws, as you may know by now, are not gluten free.

Legume

Legume

Legume is a nice little fine dining restaurant on North Craig street in Oakland, PA.  Its menu changes quite frequently, which I find endearing.  The menu is small, but covers a lot of options.  The space is nice and the atmosphere is quaint.  The service was attentive and the waiter was helpful.

I ordered the duck leg confit.  It came with rice, but I substituted it with crispy golden potatoes.  There were collard greens on the plate and it was garnished with a cherry sauce.  It was salty, crispy, sweet and delicious.  The rich flavors complimented each other perfectly.

The menu was a la carte, so if you want a side or salad, you have to order them separately.  I actuality don't mind this style of restaurant because I decide how hungry I am, not the chef.  I thought this meal was the perfect size without ordering any extras.  I didn't even have any room for dessert.

I really loved this place.  I can't wait to come back to try something else.

This was the lamb shank.  Because of the gravy like sauce on this dish, I don't think it was gluten free, but they said they could make several things on the menu gluten free, just ask.  My non-gluten free friend said this was delicious.

Cork 1794

Cork 1794

This place looked like it had potential.  When I stopped in, one of the servers told me that there were a few items on the menu that could be made gluten free.  She pointed them out and I agreed they looked promising.  At least this place know what gluten free means.

The sign out front says they take reservations.  I made reservations.  When I showed up for the reservation, they didn't save any tables for the reservation and told me it would be about another 45 minutes.  That's irritating that they don't know how to handle reservations.  I guess maybe because it was during the wine festival, but don't take my reservation if you can't plan accordingly for them.

One of the the allure to this place is that it was an old bank and you can eat in the vault.  No one in my party wanted to eat in there.  There was only one table inside the vault.  I don't know, I thought the vault was pretty cool.

The service was slow.  The waitress forgot our drinks. She was very ditzy, but they were very busy.  I ordered the chicken breast stuffed with spinach and ricotta cheese with a fresh mozzarella cream sauce.  Nothing about it was fresh.

The entree was obviously prepared, cooked, frozen, then reheated.  This is not what I expect from a restaurant.  If I wanted to eat a pre-made reheated meal, I'd reheat it myself.  The chicken texture was weird and not pleasant.  The cream sauce made my stomach upset, and the spinach was over cooked, wilted, and mushy.  It's hard to claim something is gluten free when you didn't make it fresh at the time it was ordered.  So although I don't think the chicken was floured or the cream sauce thickened with flour, I do think there was cross contamination in this meal that had me sick for days.

I would not recommend this place for a gluten free diner.  Although, there wasn't much in the area that could accommodate a gluten free diner.  Go here at your own risk.

Unfortunately, their frozen prepared food extended to the the ravioli.  Their pasta was a lumpy ball stuck together and hard, and the flank steak was over cooked, but probably the best thing I saw here.  So I don't even recommend the food here for a non gluten free diner either.  It's just frozen reheated pre made meals.
